Autumn Term 1

English

Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar (PVPG)

Children in Year 5 will learn the Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar (PVPG) — an approach that focuses on the foundations of writing: grammar and punctuation.

In maths, place value is recognised as the building block on which successful mathematicians are made. Without a secure grasp of it, children often struggle to make sense of other concepts including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Because of its importance, place value is taught as the very first unit in each year group and revisited regularly throughout the curriculum.

Year 5 Mathematics
In Year 5, pupils follow the Hampshire Mathematics Scheme of Learning, which provides a clear and progressive approach to developing strong mathematical understanding. Throughout the year, children will build confidence in number, place value, calculation, fractions, geometry, and measures, while also developing their reasoning and problem-solving skills. Lessons encourage discussion, exploration, and the use of practical resources to deepen understanding. We place a strong emphasis on explaining thinking and applying mathematics to real-life contexts, helping children become confident, resilient, and independent mathematicians.
