Class 2A

Welcome to 2A! Our class teacher is Miss Smart, and our class LSAs are Mrs Hayles and Miss Cotton.

Spring

Wider Curriculum

This term we have learnt about monochromatic art and created our own pieces! We have also started to learn about materials in science which is going to involve some experiments to learn about why we may choose different materials for different things.

In music we are starting to learn some songs from around the UK in our singing unit.

Maths

To begin with in maths, we were learning about geometry with 2D and 3D shapes. We have now moved on to adding and subtracting and place values. This revisits some of the things we learnt last term but will introduce the children to some new concepts too, using concrete materials.

We still do maths fluency sessions to make the children feel more confident in their numbers and fact families.

Writing

We have continued with our non-chronological report about minibeasts. We started by looking at the different features of them and have now looked at writing our own. We will be writing about bees, snails, butterflies and beetles.

We also do handwriting following the letterjoin programme and are beginning to write joined-up letters!

Reading and spelling

We have moved on from the phonics units to Little Wandle's bridge to spelling. This introduces the children to different spelling rules and will lead on to the spelling units after. This takes place daily and we have lots of practice using the rules.

We do 'Reading Squads' three times a week with the children. They are in different groups and read Little Wandle books with an adult. This also involves looking at flashcards of sounds and words related to the book. At the end of the read, there are different activities that focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension, which are three of the focus areas for reading. The groups who aren't reading with an adult during this session engage in book talk, which encourages them to talk about their book together and explore different themes. All groups are read with during the week but this rotates.

The children are also taken to the school library once a week and are given the opportunity to take a book out to encourage reading for pleasure.

Autumn

Wider curriculum

This term we will be learning about living things and their habitats in science. This will be followed by making buzzing bookmarks in DT and then how technology has changed in history. We have also looked at what IT is in computing, sound safaris in music and are starting to look at special people in RE.

Maths

In maths, we have learnt about place value. The children have learnt how to partition numbers, use number lines and use the < > = symbols to compare numbers and more! We have used lots of concrete learning materials this term to support the children in their learning alongside recording in their books. We will be moving on to addition and subtraction, starting with adding and subtracting tens and then adding different two-digit numbers.

We also do maths fluency sessions in the week to support their recognition of numbers and number facts.

Writing

This term we have started looking at the Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar. This will form the foundations to support the children in their writing and is an approach followed throughout the whole school.

This term we will look at:

-Common and proper nouns

-Verbs

-What is a subject?

-Sentences and their clauses

We have also started to look at the features in a non-chronological report ready to write our own.

Phonics

There is more information about phonics on our whole school phonics page.

We follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme and in 2A we have started recapping some of our sounds from the end of year 1 to consolidate our learning. This is done in daily phonics sessions each morning.

Reading

We do 'Reading Squads' three times a week with the children. They are in different groups and read Little Wandle books with an adult. This also involves looking at flashcards of sounds and words related to the book. At the end of the read, there are different activities that focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension, which are three of the focus areas for reading.

The children are also taken to the school library once a week and are given the opportunity to take a book out to encourage reading for pleasure.
