Science

Animals Including Humans

In the Autumn term in Science, Year 3 have been learning all about how amazing our bodies are! We have learnt the names of some of the bones in the human skeleton and discovered why having a skeleton is so important. We also compared human skeletons with those of different animals to see how they are similar and different.

We explored how our muscles work together by making a fun cardboard model of the bicep and tricep, which helped us understand how muscles contract and relax to help us move.

We have also learnt about the importance of a healthy diet and how the food we eat helps our bodies to grow, stay active and function properly.

Forces and Magnets

In our next Science topic, we will be investigating forces and magnets. We will conduct a range of exciting experiments to explore how forces can move objects across different surfaces. We will also investigate how magnets interact with different materials and how the strength of a magnet can affect its behaviour.

We are looking forward to lots of hands-on learning and scientific discoveries!

History

Stone Age. Iron Age and Bronze Age

In History during the Autumn term, Year 3 travelled back in time to learn about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and early human history. We explored how people survived during these times by learning how they found food, what they wore, and where they lived.

We looked closely at round houses, discovering what they were made from and why this shape was useful. We learnt how these homes helped to keep people warm, dry and safe.

Through stories, discussions and activities, we compared life in the past with life today and learnt how humans adapted over time to meet their needs. This topic helped us develop our understanding of history and sparked our curiosity about how people lived long ago.

Geography

United Kingdom

In Geography this Spring term, Year 3 have been using atlases to explore the countries, regions and counties of the United Kingdom. We have learnt how to locate different places on maps and name key areas.

We have also learnt about the different types of settlements, such as villages, towns and cities, and discussed how these are formed. As part of this topic, we explored our local area, identifying important places and landmarks.

We learnt to recognise physical features, such as rivers, hills and fields, and human features, including roads, buildings and shops. We also looked at a range of maps and learnt how to use map keys and symbols to interpret the information they show.

This topic helped us develop our map-reading skills and a better understanding of the surrounding area.

Art

In Art this term, Year 3 explored how to use clay to create sculptures. We studied artwork from Mexico, focusing on the different features, colours, textures and styles often seen in this type of art.

Using what we had learnt, we created our own clay cactus sculptures, carefully considering shape, texture and colour. We also made mood boards to gather ideas and explore how the places we live can inspire our artwork.

We were very lucky to welcome a local wood sculptor, Paul Sivell, into school, who talked to us about his work and explained how the community and the Isle of Wight inspire his creativity. This experience helped us understand how artists use their surroundings to influence their artwork.

DT

In Design and Technology, Year 3 developed their sewing skills by making a Stone Age pouch. The pouches needed to be functional, allowing a Stone Age person to carry different items.

We carefully planned and designed our pouches, considering the materials, style, and the environment in which they would have been made during the Stone Age. We practised a range of sewing techniques and chose the most appropriate stitching for the materials we were using.

Year 3 were proud to complete their sewing during a school workshop, working alongside their parents and carers. This was a lovely opportunity to work together, share skills and create a finished product inspired by life in the Stone Age.

PSHE

My HappyMind

We are a My Happy Mind school, and this term we have been busy meeting our brains! We have learnt about how our brains work and what happens when different parts of the brain take over our thoughts and feelings.

We have explored how our feelings and actions are linked, helping us to understand how our behaviour can be influenced by our emotions. We have learnt about happy breathing, which helps us to calm our bodies and take control of our brains when we feel angry, stressed or sad.

These lessons have helped us to build confidence, resilience and positive strategies to support our emotional wellbeing, both in school and at home.

PSHE

In PSHE, we have been learning about keeping ourselves safe in a range of situations. We have talked about staying safe at home, in school and online, and discussed who we can talk to if we ever feel worried or unsafe.

We have learnt about the safe use of medicine, understanding that it should only be taken with an adult's supervision and that instructions should be followed carefully. We have also explored how to make safe choices and look after our own well-being.

Alongside this, we have focused on building positive relationships with others by learning about kindness, respect, sharing and working together. These lessons help us develop confidence, make sensible choices and build healthy friendships.

Maths

Autumn 1

3.1 Number - place value; addition and subtraction.

3.2 Addition and subtraction with measurement.

Autumn 2

3.3 Multiplication and division

3.4 Fractions and Geometry

Spring 1

3.5 Number - place value with measurement

Writing

English – Grammarsaurus

In our writing Grammarsaurus lessons, we have been learning about how sentences are constructed. We have explored different types of nouns and verbs and how they are used in our writing.

We have played a range of fun writing games to help us understand collective and partitive nouns, as well as the difference between regular and irregular verbs. These activities have helped us develop our grammar skills and become more confident writers.

English – Non-Chronological Reports

In Spring 1, we are starting our first writing journey by reading Prehistoric Park, a fiction text about a park that has created its own creatures.

We are learning how to use a range of writing tools to describe these creatures, and our own, in more detail. We are carefully considering our word choices, so people will want to visit our park and see the exciting creatures we have created.
