OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

🌟 Playtime is Getting a Makeover! 🌟

Our Second Half Term: Summer 1 2026

Wow, we have made so much progress in our OPAL journey this half-term. With parent donations, OPAL team efforts and some serious construction, our OPAL environment is transforming.

This half-term we have seen the completion of our purpose-built welly store. These booths provide spaces for our children to store and change into their wellies so that we can access our field (and in future our muddy spaces) all year round!

We have focused on introducing enhancements to our field as the weather has improved:

The children love adapting this obstacle course, building and creating to challenge themselves. Not only do they need balance and coordination, but team work and problem-solving skills; what a lot of learning our play provides!

This versatile area allows the children to be imaginative, creating interesting spaces to pretend in as well as providing calm spaces where children can enjoy time together.

Our music wall has become a big 'hit.'

This incredible area is designed for construction and transport. With a wide range of vehicles and transport related resources, children are able to adapt the area to suit and extend their play. This has proved to be a very popular space since we introduced it and has been especially valuable in supporting children from different year groups to mix and build friendships.

This half-term we have introduced our Golden Welly and Golden Broom awards.

The Golden Welly is awarded each week to celebrate amazing play. A child is chosen by showing our school values in their play (respect, excellence, aspiration, determination and you matter).

The Golden Broom is awarded to the person who shows an excellent attitude towards tidying up our resources and equipment, ensuring it is well looked after and ready for everyone to use.

Our final introduction this half-term, ready just in time for our final assembly of the half-term, is our beautiful (and enormous) sandpit located in the centre of our field. The children were thrilled to get tot play in here and are looking forward to using it everyday next half-term as we move into our full-time OPAL lunchtimes.

Our First Half Term: Spring 2 2026

The children were so excited to begin playing in our developing Opal environment. This half-term we have been very busy. We have been offered so many generous donations from our families and community, it has given us a great launch. The children worked together to develop our Opal Play Charter which helps keep everyone safe and having fun.

We have been able to introduce several areas this half-term:

Our dressing up and stage area have been a huge success. Children have loved exploring their imagination and creativity as well as getting moving to the music from our outdoor speakers.

From our youngest Reception children to our oldest Year 6s, the children have engaged in great quality play.

Children have been busy engaging with our small world and construction resources, exploring in their own ways and making connections with new friends.

We are also very excited to see our new uniform appearing. It is designed to be suitable for the active opportunities that the children will enjoy in their Opal environment: comfortable, safe and looking smart:

What a super start to our Opal journey!!!!

Next half-term we have some more fantastic areas to introduce, and we will be introducing our Play Detectives:

Introducing OPAL: Better Playtimes for Every Child

We are thrilled to announce that our school is joining the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme.

Did you know that play makes up about 20% of a child’s time at school? That adds up to nearly a year and a half of their primary school life! We believe that this time is really important, and we want to make sure every minute of it is high-quality, inclusive, and fun.

What is OPAL?

OPAL is an award-winning, mentor-supported program that helps schools transform their playgrounds. Backed by over 20 years of research and endorsed by Sport England, it is designed to give children the best possible start in life by improving their physical and emotional health.

πŸ’‘ Why are we doing this?

Research shows that high-quality play doesn't just burn off energy—it helps children become better learners, improves their wellbeing, and makes school more enjoyable.        The OPAL programme brings some spectacular benefits to our entire school community:

  • ⚑️ More Time for Learning Most schools gain 10 extra minutes of teaching time per lesson! Why? Because children return to class happy, well-exercised, and ready to focus. No more "winding down" time needed!

  • 🌈 Better Behaviour, Happier Days: Schools using OPAL see a massive 80% drop in playground incidents. When children are engaged and creative, they’re too busy having fun to fall out!

  • πŸ’ͺ Building "Super Skills" for Life: Watch them grow! Our students will rapidly develop resilience, imagination, and confidence. These are the "core skills" that help them succeed far beyond the classroom.

  • 🌍 Everyone is Invited! OPAL makes play better for every child, every day... no exceptions. It’s 100% inclusive, ensuring every student finds a way to shine during their break.

  • 😊 Brighter Smiles & Lower Stress: Play is a human right! Both children and staff report feeling happier, less stressed, and more excited to come to school every single morning.

πŸ› οΈ What will change?

As we roll out the program, you might notice some exciting changes:

  • New Ways to Play: Children will have more freedom to explore the school grounds and use different resources to build, create, and imagine.
  • All-Weather Fun: We want children to enjoy the outdoors all year round, not just on sunny days.
  • A Little More Mess: Your children might get a bit muddier or come home with "playwork" stories! This is a sign of a child who has been challenged, had fun, and learned something new.

We are committed to providing a safe, supervised environment where children can take healthy risks and enjoy the freedom of childhood. We can't wait to see the spectacular results this will bring to our school community!

⏳ A Journey, Not a Race

Transforming our play culture is a big shift, and we want to do it right! We are treating this as a gradual, long-term project. Over the coming months and years, you will see our grounds evolve bit by bit. We’ll be working closely with our OPAL mentor to:

  • Train our staff in new ways of supporting play.
  • Slowly introduce new zones and resources to the playground.
  • Test and learn what works best for our specific students and space.

We appreciate your patience and support as we take these small steps toward a big, spectacular change for our children!

πŸ“¦ How You Can Help: Our "Loose Parts" Wish List

To make OPAL a success, we need "loose parts"—everyday items that don’t look like toys to us, but are goldmines for a child's imagination!

If you are clearing out your shed, garage, or kitchen, please consider donating any of the following (as long as they are in safe, sturdy condition):
