Welcome to Class 4A. Here is what we will be learning this term. 

Maths

In Maths, we will learn the basics of Year 4 place value in order to access the new learning in number in Year 4. We will explore money and different ways of making amounts. We will explore adding and subtracting with 4-digit numbers. Later this term, we will learn the 6 and 7 times tables as well as solving problems involving multiplication and division. 

 

Reading

We are using Grammarsaurus for our Reading this academic year and have read about orangutans. This has linked into our next unit around saving the rainforest. This unit is helping the children to understand about the effects of deforestation. Later in the term, we will look at non-chronological reports on the Bronze Age and Ancient Egypt. 

 

Writing

We have started the year in Writing by looking at the Place Value of Grammar and Punctuation. The children have developed their understanding of verbs and nouns. In Autumn 2, the children will begin their first writing unit where we will construct non-chronological reports on fictional extinct animals. The children are also regularly practising their handwriting and spelling to meet the Year 4 expectations. 

 

Art

We will explore sculpture by creating Canopic Jars out of clay.

 

Science

This term, we will explore living things and their habitats. The children will practise classifying animals into different groups. Later in the term, we will explore states of matter, including understanding the differences of solids, liquids and gases. 

 

Geography

Later this term, we will begin our Geography where we will learn about a region in Italy. We will compare this to our local region. 

 

DT

In DT we will be designing and creating a chocolate bar. We will discuss how to ensure fair trade during this unit and explore the ingredients that go into chocolate and their origins.

 

PE

In PE this term, children in year 4 will be developing gymnastic skills, such as balancing, jumping and travelling. In Autumn 2, Year 4 will be practising dances and creating sequences within these lessons. 

 

Computing

This term children are learning about the internet and how it works. In Autumn 2, we will look at creating audio and record a short podcast. 

 

MFL

In autumn term, the children will be looking at portraits and using adjectives to describe what they can see. 

 

Music

We are developing the musical skills of body percussion to begin this term. This will be around the theme of the rainforest.

 

PSHE

In PSHE, the children will be exploring thoughts, feelings and behaviours both inside of school and outside of school. In addition, the children are learning about their brains through the My Happy Mind programme. This term, we are looking at the 'Meet Your Brain' module where the children learn about the different parts of the brain and how they work together.
