Year 3 Tudor Portraits

Year Three have been finding out more about The Tudors by looking carefully at their portraits.  Portrait painting became very popular in Tudor times, long before cameras, skilled artists like Hans Holbein, were able to produce detailed, life like pictures. 


We were amazed that Henry Vlll agreed to marry Anne of Cleves after only seeing a tiny miniature painting of her face! 

We looked at some famous Tudor portraits and then had a go at painting our own versions.  We sketched the shape of the faces and carefully mixed the skin tones.  Then we waited until this paint had dried before adding the details to the faces.  We used metallic gold and silver paints to add the details to the clothes.’
